There is no conclusive scientific study that links the spread of the current strain of coronavirus to contaminated currency notes. Cash is the most preferred mode of transaction in many countries across the globe. The respiratory droplets expelled from a coronavirus infected person can contaminate and persist on the various surfaces. This has led to a fear of spreading the virus through currency notes and coins. However, the reports state that currently there is no evidence which suggests that coronavirus can be transmitted through banknotes and coins. The World Health Organisation has advised taking measures to maintain proper hygiene post handling of notes. Even the Reserve Bank Of India has refrained from issuing any statement on avoiding the usage of paper currency. The COVID-19 pandemic has given rise to a lot of potentially dangerous misinformation.
