Republican and Democratic voters alike were not allowed to enter Detroit counting center owing to COVID-19 restrictions.Republican voters reportedly wanted to storm a counting center in Detroit on election day as rumors of election fraud erupted once both Decision Desk HQ and the Associated Press called Michigan for Joe Biden. Republican voters were demanding the counting be stopped unless some of them were allowed “meaningful access” to observe the process. Videos on social media platforms showed dozens of Republicans chanting slogans demanding access to the center, eventually resulting in police intervention. The voters were reportedly stopped because the venue had reached its maximum capacity due COVID-19 restrictions. Both Republicans and Democrats are allowed 134 “challengers” to observe the vote-counting in Michigan. According to Buzzfeed, about 400 challengers from both sides of the aisle were already inside the counting room as poll workers continued to go through absentee ballots — significantly above the permissible limit. Challengers also knocked on windows and doors forcing election workers to cover some of the glass with cardboard and poster board, leading to more allegations of lack of transparency. The cardboard coverings on the windows were added because people on the other side of them were taking photos which is against protocol, Lawrence Garcia, Detroit's corporation counsel and election commissioner told Detroit News.
