Context

Posts on Facebook claim that Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers' cancer was related to COVID-19 vaccines. According to the BBC, Myers died of cancer at age 66 on February 28, 2024, two years after he announced his cancer diagnosis.

Some posts claim that the COVID-19 vaccines and the booster jabs have caused people to develop cancer and led to “turbo cancers."

However, there is no evidence that Dave Myers' cancer diagnosis or death was related to the COVID-19 vaccine. These claims are unfounded but commonly circulate around celebrity deaths. Logically Facts has previously fact-checked similar claims about other celebrity deaths being linked to COVID-19 vaccinations and found them to be false.

In fact

Both Dave Myers and his co-star Si King have previously received COVID-19 vaccinations, which they have mentioned in posts on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). However, the fact that Myers was vaccinated does not correlate to causation and does not mean that the vaccine caused his cancer. Additionally, no official sources have stated that Myers’ cancer was a result of vaccination.

Myers' family and medical professionals have not revealed which type of cancer he had. He told The Guardian in 2022 that he had chosen not to reveal his diagnosis in full “because everybody then goes Googling, everybody becomes an amateur doctor and I don’t want to be judged, yet.”

The United States National Cancer Institute states that there is no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines cause cancer. The American Cancer Society also states this, saying, “There is no information that suggests that COVID-19 vaccines cause cancer. There is also no information that suggests these vaccines can make cancer grow or recur (come back).”

Nicola Smith, a senior health information manager at Cancer Research UK told Logically Facts that “there is no good evidence of a link between the COVID-19 vaccine and cancer risk. The vaccine has been deemed a safe and effective way to protect against COVID-19 infection or developing serious symptoms."

There is also no evidence that COVID-19 vaccines have been linked to “turbo cancers.” Logically Facts previously investigated these claims and found them to be unsubstantiated and false. The idea that vaccines cause “turbo cancer” is an anti-vax myth.

The verdict

There is no evidence that Dave Myers' cancer and death were related to or caused by the COVID-19 vaccine. Furthermore, the COVID-19 vaccine does not cause cancer. Therefore, we have marked this claim as false.
