Former U.S. President Obama's parents, who met as students at the University of Hawaii, were Ann Dunham, a white American from Kansas, and Barack Obama Sr., a Kenyan who studied in the United States. The director of Hawaii's Department of Health, Chiyome Fukino, issued a statement confirming that the state held Obama's original birth certificate on the record are under state policies and procedures. Obama released the long-form version of his birth certificate on April 27, 2011, which shows he was born in the United States. The White House said he received a special exemption to release a copy of his long-form birth certificate from the Hawaii Department of Health, which keeps such documents confidential.
