Democrats want to impose stricter regulations around gun control but do not advocate taking away gun rights. Many Republicans have claimed that Democrats want to take away the second amendment. The second amendment says that "the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." Some Democrats have advocated repealing the second amendment. However, this stance is not being pursued by Democrats in Congress or by President Joe Biden. Biden has expressed support for the second amendment, saying that he is a gun owner himself. He does propose some firearm restrictions, however, such as a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. Biden's plan includes mandating that people who own assault weapons sell them to the federal government or properly register them with the authorities. He also supports background checks and other regulations. In an interview with CNN, Biden said that he would implement a federal gun buyback program for assault weapons, but not all guns. Biden also said guns that had been legally purchased would not be confiscated. Moreover, to reduce the stockpiling of firearms, Biden supports legislation restricting the number of firearms an individual may purchase per month to one. He also supports controlling illegal weapons to stop mass shootings in America. According to his policy, if the owners of assault rifles were not registering their weapons with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms under National Firearms Act, they would have to sell them to the government. In the past few months, gun control advocates such as Everytown for Gun Safety and the Human Rights Campaign have also pressured Biden to introduce a series of executive orders related to gun control, including tracking so-called “ghost guns” manufactured by owners at home and mandating gun dealers notify the FBI when they make a sale, among others," reported the Independent. In December 2020, Biden renewed his calls for more robust gun control measures in the wake of the eighth anniversary of the killing of 20 children and six teachers and school staff during the Sandy Hook massacre.
