Changes were made to the Rules of Engagement, empowering field commanders to order their troops to use firearms under 'extraordinary circumstances'.The border agreements signed between India and China in 1996 and 2005 included the clause that the Indian and Chinese armies would not fire at each other. The agreements also dictated that the two forces would not use blasting equipment or firearms within two kilometers of the Line of Actual Control(LAC). Significant changes were made to the Rules of Engagement in the wake of the Galwan Valley face-off, during which almost 20 Indian army personnel died. The field commanders can now order troops to use firearms under extraordinary circumstances.
