Around 40,000 of registered child marriages in Iran are for children aged between 11 and 14 and more than 300 of them are girls under the age of nine. The law in Iran states that the legal age of marriage is 13 for girls and 15 for boys, but marriages can still be carried out at a younger age with the consent of fathers(or legal guardians) and the permission of a court judge. But, the existing law does not specify a minimum age for marriage and has only imposed conditions for children under a certain age. This has facilitated some families to marry off children as young as eight. An article by the BBC states that every year between 500,000 to 600,000 child marriages are registered in Iran and up to 40,000 registered child marriages are for children aged between 11 and 14, and more than 300 of them are girls under the age of nine.
