The Food and Drug Administration has listed 69 hand sanitizers, which contain a toxic substance called Methanol or wood alcohol as of July 17, 2020.Food and Drug Administration’s investigation of Methanol in certain hand sanitizers found that 69 hand sanitizers manufactured by several companies contain wood alcohol, includes nine sanitizers manufactured by Eskbiochem, a Mexico based company. It has warned its consumers and health care providers to avoid these hand sanitizers containing Methanol, or wood alcohol, which can be toxic when absorbed through the skin or ingested. Also, it can be life-threatening and may even cause blindness requiring hospitalization, and death in some adults and children. Further, the FDA has advised the companies to remove these hand sanitizer products from the market due to the risks associated with methanol poisoning. The investigation is ongoing.
