On August 10, 2020, Mukherjee, through his official twitter handle, announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19 while undergoing a routine checkup and requested the proximities to get tested for COVID-19. On the same day, he was put on a ventilator due to his serious health condition. President Ram Nath Kovind and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh enquired about his health, and many officials wished him for a speedy recovery.
